What Products to Avoid with Rosacea: A Q&A with Dr. Amy Basile

Managing rosacea can be challenging, especially when flare-ups seem unpredictable and difficult to control.

To help patients better understand how to care for their skin, Amy Basile, DO, MPH, FAAD, shares expert insight into the common triggers, ingredient sensitivities, and daily habits that can impact rosacea. From choosing the right skincare products to identifying lifestyle factors that may worsen symptoms, her guidance offers a practical foundation for building a routine that supports calmer, healthier skin.

1. What skin care products should you avoid if you have rosacea?

Rosacea patients tend to have more sensitive skin.  They are more reactive to even the simplest of products, including moisturizers and sunscreens.  My suggestion is to use brands that have proven sensitive ingredients, such as La Roche-Posay’s Toleriane line, Avene’s Tolerance, and Vanicream products.

2. Common triggers other than skin care products that can affect rosacea?

The most common triggers for rosacea patients include stress, heat, alcohol, caffeine, cold weather, and spicy foods.  Once you know which of the above triggers your rosacea, it is best to minimize or avoid them entirely.  Rosacea flares include flushing and breakouts associated with flushing, particularly on the cheeks and chin.  Some patients can develop an enlarged nose, otherwise known as rhynophyma.  Some go on to develop blepharitis or eye symptoms associated with rosacea.

3. What is it about these products and triggers that impacts a flare-up?

Patients with rosacea tend to be sensitive to ingredients because their skin barrier has been compromised, rather than the products themselves triggering a flare-up.  Rosacea skin is red, inflamed, and more likely to burn or sting when exposed to products.  I will often recommend rosacea patients get patch tested to identify if they have particular contact irritants or allergies to the most common skin allergens, including fragrance, metals, preservatives, and other additives.

4. What products should you look for to avoid these flare-ups?

I typically recommend fragrance-free, sensitive skin products with the fewest ingredients.  All-natural or organic doesn’t necessarily mean it will be better for your sensitive skin.  In fact, some of these ingredients could be more irritating and allergenic, especially for patients with rosacea.

5. Give us an ideal skin care routine for someone dealing with rosacea

Rosacea skincare has to be very personalized.  If you think you have rosacea, you should be evaluated by a dermatologist to confirm the diagnosis.  Then we will carefully assess whether you need help with redness, breakouts, eye symptoms, or a combination of these.  There are so many treatment options available. Unfortunately, nothing works overnight, so stay patient and keep working with your dermatologist to find the best routine for you.
